NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Scam artists have taken their identity theft to the next level. They are calling victims across the country claiming that they work for “U.S. Immigration,” asking for personal information, the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general warned.
The scam artists are using a technique known as spoofing, which basically means they alter their caller ID so it looks like they are calling from the U.S Department of Homeland Security hotline-number.
The thieves ask the victims for very personal information such as: social security numbers, alien numbers, and passport numbers. In doing so, the scam artists have taken the information of tens of thousands of people, and have stolen millions of dollars.
