WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday took up a brand new dispute over the detention of immigrants, agreeing to listen to an appeal by President Donald Trump’s administration of a court ruling it says hampers the deportation of immigrants that have committed crimes.

The case, the most recent immigration-related dispute to return before the 9 justices at a time once the administration has taken a tough line toward immigrants, involves individuals guilty of criminal offenses that are detained by the US government for potential deportation when finishing their sentences.

Under federal immigration law, immigrants that are guilty of specific offenses are subject to obligatory detention throughout their deportation proceedings. They will be also be detained indefinitely not having the right to a bond hearing once finishing their criminal sentences.
